Gynaecological Ultrasound Scans
Do you have any Gynae problems?
We can help you with a gynaecological ultrasound
At our Gynae clinic we performboth TAS & TVS (transabdominal and transvaginal) ultrasounds to diagnose any gynaecological symptoms that are causing you pain, discomfort, irregular periods, unable to conceive or any other concern.
Ultrasound scans are taken of the female pelvis to look at the size and appearance of the ovaries and uterus to determine if there is any underlying pathology or abnormalities.
It is used to investigate and diagnose a number of gynaecological ailments e.g:
- Irregular bleeding.
- Heavy bleeding
- Pelvic pain.
- Infertility.
- Recurrent miscarriage.
- Abnormal findings (cysts, fibroids, or endometriosis ) found during aearlier exam.
- Checking the position of an IUD contraceptive device.
Our scans are trans abdominal first and then we perform transvaginal, i.e. through the vagina. Transvaginal scans provide clearer images than traditional scanning allows. It is a quick and safe procedure providing instant and accurate results.
What problems might a gynaecological ultrasound reveal?
- Polycystic ovaries (PCOS).
- Follicular / hemorrhagic cysts.
- Endometriosis or adenomyosis (benign conditions).
- Growths around the uterus and ovaries (such as fibroids or Dermoids).
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Any suspicion of uterine / ovarian malignancy
Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans:-
1. Early pregnancy scanning done at 6-8 weeksof gestation
- Exclude ectopic pregnancy
- Confirm the gestational age
- Exclude twins
- Confirm viability
- Level 1 scan / NT NB Scan are performed at 12 to 13wks 5 days and in conjunction with a blood test a risk for Down’s Syndrome is calculated. It has many other advantages like calculating risk for pre eclampsia and IUGR.
- Foetal Anomaly scans are performed at 18 to 24 weeks to exclude foetal abnormalities. A detailed scan of all the foetal organs is carried out.
- Foetal Colour Doppler scans are used to assess foetal wellbeing after 24 weeks of pregnancy. This is a helpful scan to rule out intrauterine growth restriction, some cardiac problems and growth specially in twins .
- 3D / 4 D scans are useful to examine the external features of the baby, best done from 24-34 weeks gestation.
Early Pregnancy or 'Dating Scan'
An early ultrasound scan provides you with important information about the number of babies and the expected delivery date. Confirmation of pregnancy and the foetal heart can be seen from 6 weeks gestation by vaginal scan and from 7-8 weeks by abdominal scan. This scan also enables the nuchal scan to be booked at the correct date.
Level 1 Scan
This is a screening test for Down’s syndrome that we offer at 11-14 weeks. It involves an ultrasound to measure the thickness of the layer of fluid at the back of the baby’s neck. All foetuses have fluid behind their necks. It has been found that more fluid tends to build up at the base of a fetus’s neck when it has chromosomal or genetic conditions. More fluid in this area could indicate the fetus has a condition like Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21), Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) or Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18).
A higher NT measurement may also indicate an increased risk for congenital heart conditions. The results of the NT scan can determine if the fetus is likely or unlikely to have these conditions. At the time of nuchal translucency, the ultrasound also screens for some basic anatomical structures in the developing fetus. Other anomalies identified at the time of NT may increase the risk for genetic or structural conditions.
When is a nuchal translucency scan done?
This NT scan is performed whenfetusis between 11 and 13 weeks of gestation or when the fetus is between 45 millimetres and 84 millimetres from crown (top of their head) to rump (bottom of their torso). This is because the fluid behind its neck tends to get reabsorbed by its body after 14 weeks of gestation. This makes it harder to measure later in pregnancy. NT tests are often done as part of a first-trimester screening test
The results of the ultrasound can be combined with a blood test to work out a risk figure.
Anomaly Scan 18 - 24th week of pregnancy
This scan is performed between 18 to 24 weeks and is a detailed examination of the baby’s anatomy and wellbeing.
An anomaly scan, also known as a fetal anatomy scan , is a detailed ultrasound performed during the second trimester of pregnancy (typically between 18 and 24 weeks) to evaluate the baby’s physical development and identify any potential abnormalities.
The scan also checks the position of the placenta and the fluid surrounding the baby.
Doppler Scan for Growth and Wellbeing of foetus.
This scan is performed in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy between 27 and 40 weeks to check your baby’s growth and wellbeing
The test is predominantly performed to check for the following severities:
- Possibilities and underlying risks of a premature birth
- Prominent malformations and underdevelopment of the foetus, especially in multiple pregnancies
- Risks of intrauterine growth restriction
- Uneven growth in one of the fetuses in the case of twins
- Risks of high blood pressure in the mother
- Presence of placenta accreta (in rare cases)
- HERE AT ASPIRE LIFE DIAGNOSTICS , PRENATAL SEX DETERMINATION AND DISCLOSURE OF SEX (BOY OR GIRL BEFORE BIRTH ) OF FOETUS IS NOT DONE.
- IT IS PROHIBITED AND PUNISHABLEUNDER PC PNDT ACT.
- SEEKING /ASKING FOR THE SEX OF CHILDIS IS ALSO PUNISHABLE OFFENCE UNDER PC & PNDTACT
